Giant Swing

Hetitage Route 12: Giant Swing

Giant Swing was built in King Rama I’s reign before being moved to the city courtyard during King Rama V’s and remains there until today. This towering red swing was built for Giant Swing ceremony, a Brahman New Year celebration known as Triyamphawai during December – January. According to Brahman belief, Vishnu would descend from heaven to earth for 10 days. Eventually, during Rama VII’s reign, the ceremony was cancelled but the Giant Swing still stands tall.
